Gisela A. Schmitt, age 95, formerly of Silver Ridge Westerly in Toms River, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 10, 2018 at the Magnolia Gardens Assisted Living Care Center in Toms River.
Born in Graz, Austria, Gisela relocated to the United States in 1926 at the age of 3. She began working as a clerical typist for the Morning Call Newspaper in Paterson, NJ. In 1959, the family relocated from Fair Lawn to Wyckoff, NJ where Gisela became an active member of the Altar Guild and worked as the secretary for The Church of the Good Shephard in Midland Park. After raising four children, she became an Administrative Assistant for the Eastern Christian Children's Retreat in Wyckoff, NJ where she remained for eight years. The family also enjoyed a seasonal summer home in Sunset Manor on the Jersey shore for fifty years. Upon retirement to the shore area, Gisela became a volunteer at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ where she remained for twenty years. Her favorite hobby was painting, which she was able to spend considerable time perfecting during her early years in retirement.
Gisela was predeceased by her husband George R. Schmitt, Jr., her brother William Benz and his wife Dorothy; Hazel and Hannah Schmitt; Milton and Gloria (Schmitt) Sabanosh; and parents Karl & Gisela Benz. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Catherine and John Mersfelder; daughters Linda C. Ferrara and Donna J. Schmitt; sons George R. Schmitt, III and his wife Lynn, and Thomas A. Schmitt; grandsons Michael Ferrara, Brent Schmitt and Evan Schmitt; granddaughters Loren Powell, Dana McGoldrick, Tracey Feller, Kerri Grotnes and Gina Amesbury, as well as, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was private and entrusted to Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River. A private family memorial service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred and can be made to the Eastern Christian Children's Retreat, 700 Mountain Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 0741
